Dr Zena Elhassan MAPS MCCN
Practice Principal/ Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist
Board-approved supervisor

Helping individuals understand their unique experience and build towards their growth and wellbeing.I am a clinical neuropsychologist with over a decade of experience in public health and private practice settings. I work with clients facing a wide range of challenges, including acquired brain injury, substance use histories, dementia, and medico-legal matters. My work includes both assessment and intervention, which I find especially rewarding as I see my clients progress towards their goals.
Before completing my neuropsychology training at La Trobe University, I worked as an applied behaviour therapist with children on the autism spectrum, and as an allied health assistant in a transitional living centre for adults recovering from brain injury. These early experiences shaped my commitment to tailoring my approach to each client’s unique strengths and challenges, and to support them to live by their values and move towards the life they want.
My style is warm, inclusive, and non-judgmental. I aim to create a culturally safe and respectful space where my clients feel understood, while ensuring cultural factors are integrated into both assessment and intervention.
Alongside my clinical work, I am a sessional academic at La Trobe University and guest lecture on culturally responsive psychological practice, reflecting my commitment to ensuring inclusive, respectful, and evidence-based approaches within the profession. I am also a board-approved supervisor.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and my two dogs.
What Is Neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology explores how the brain affects thinking, emotions, and behaviour. It bridges brain science and psychology to understand how injury, illness, or conditions impact daily life.
What Is a Neuropsychological Assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment is an evaluation of how your brain is functioning. It uses structured tasks and clinical interviews to map strengths and challenges across cognitive (i.e., thinking) skills such as attention, reasoning, memory, language, and emotional functioning.
It helps answer questions like:
• “Why am I forgetting things?”
• “Why can’t I focus?”
• “Is this change part of a condition, or something else?”
What Is Neuropsychological INTERVENTION?
Unlike traditional talk therapy, neuropsychological intervention focuses on the use of strategies tailored to your cognitive and emotional profile. It supports:
• Adjusting to life after brain injury or illness
• Managing fatigue, memory problems, or emotional dysregulation
• Developing practical, strengths-based strategies to navigate challenges
It’s about understanding your cognitive strengths and weaknesses and building meaningful, doable strategies for everyday life.
